How Preventative Dentistry is Different from General Dentistry

Dental Check upPreventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is considered to be the hallmark of long-term oral health.

Typically, preventive dentistry calls for regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings to complement your at-home brushing and flossing routine. At Orange Family Dental, we base your treatment schedule on your unique oral health profile. If you have an underlying condition or are prone to cavities, for example, we may suggest two or more dental check-ups and teeth cleans per year.

Routine dental check-ups are important so we can:

  • Evaluate any oral health changes or new issues since your last check-up
  • Take x-rays if required to identify any problems below the tooth's surface and in the roots
  • Screening for oral cancer

Your routine check-up also includes a teeth clean to clear away all that your toothbrush leaves behind—the very ingredients that have been shown to promote tooth decay and gingivitis.

Preventive dentistry is a partnership between you and your dentist. For your part, we recommend daily brushing and flossing—our dentists and oral therapists can provide tips on how to make the most of your at-home routine.

Aside from examinations and teeth cleans, preventive dentistry services may include fluoride treatments or fissure sealants to help strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.

General Dentistry

General dentistry picks up where prevention leaves off. Our dentists provide the treatments you need to restore your oral health when something goes wrong.

General dentistry can mean anything from tooth decay requiring a tooth-coloured filling to extraction and tooth replacement. It can mean gentle root canal therapy or periodontal treatment.
