Dental Cavities

In previous decades, dentists relied on silver amalgam to treat tooth decay, but today we use composite resin—especially for the visible part of the smile. Composite resin is tooth-coloured and blends more easily with your teeth.

Tooth CavitiesTooth decay

Tooth decay affects people of all ages—not only children. And in some cases, you may discover a dark spot on your tooth or a tiny indentation. Other times, tooth decay starts small and occurs between teeth. This makes it difficult for you to find a dental cavity without help from your dentist, which is why preventive dental check-ups are so important—it is always better to treat a small cavity than a larger one.

Treating Cavities with Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Typically, your dentist discovers tooth decay during your routine dental exam, which may include x-rays to spot emerging cavities between teeth. We may treat the tooth cavity on that day or arrange a new appointment to take care of the problem.

Treating cavities means your dentist numbs the area, gently clears away the tooth decay and closes with a composite resin material that is coloured to match your tooth. After the numbing agent wears off, you may notice mild soreness, but this typically clears up in a day.

If you have old silver fillings, your dentist can also replace these with our tooth-coloured resin.

Dental care at homeLowering Your Risks for Tooth Decay

At Orange Family Dental, we want you to maintain good oral health. Part of our approach to reaching this goal is preventive dentistry.

Regular dental check-ups and professional teeth cleans may help lower your risks for decay and other dental health complications.

Teeth cleans remove stubborn plaque and bacteria from your teeth, which has been shown to cause tooth decay.

Between teeth cleans, we recommend brushing and flossing regularly to clear plaque and bacteria away from teeth. It is also essential to reduce cavity-causing fruit juices and acidic or sugary foods and beverages from your diet. If you do indulge, try adding an additional brushing and flossing session.
