Relieving Dental Pain

Many dental health conditions can cause pain, including:

  • Deep cavities
  • Root infections
  • Periodontal disease
  • Wisdom Teeth
  • Pain of unknown origin
  • Dental emergencies

At Orange Family Dental, it is our goal to relieve your pain quickly.  Our compassionate dentists and caring team are here for you and we always have 'relief of pain' appointments available each day for our patients.

Deep Cavities

Untreated cavities can lead to root infections, tooth breakage, or the need for extraction. Our dentists will always work hard to save your tooth and treat your decay as soon as possible to avoid complications like increased pain and tooth loss.

Root Infections

Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation for being complex and even painful. The reality is much different. Root canal therapy relieves pain and promotes better tooth health.

If you need a root canal, it is because your tooth has a deep infection or has suffered a trauma—past or present.root canal treatment

Root canal therapy is the best treatment available if you have a root infection or if you have an injury to your tooth. Your dentist will numb the treatment area and gently extract the infected or damaged root and pulp. We then seal the tooth with a temporary filling to promote healing. At your next dental visit, we provide a permanent filling or a dental crown. We recommend the latter if injury or infection weakened the tooth.

We customise your crown to look like your teeth—both in shape and in colour. It fits over your treated tooth and provides a safe zone between the vulnerable tooth and your bite, which prevents breakage.

Signs of root infection may include a blister on the gum and a severe toothache.

The alternative treatment for severe trauma and deep infection is extraction followed by tooth replacement. Whenever possible, your dentist wants to save your tooth and restore you to better oral health.

Periodontal Disease Treatment

Periodontal disease (gum disease) means you have a series of infections in your gums that require scheduled treatment with your dentist or oral therapist.

Typically, this means special deep cleans that hit below the gum line or scaling to remove infected tissue to help your gums heal and better adhere to your teeth. We may also recommend a specific oral health routine for home.

Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Bleeding, red or swollen gums
  • Elongated teeth
  • Gum pocketing
  • Bad breath

Wisdom Teethwisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth come in long after your adult teeth—at the back of the mouth—but they do not serve a purpose because of our modern diets. If these teeth do not erupt properly, or if they push on needed teeth, your dentist may recommend extraction to ease your pain and keep your mouth healthy.

Pain in Need of a Diagnosis

Sometimes the cause of dental pain is not immediately apparent. In this case, your dentist will investigate the situation and may take x-rays to look at the nerves and your underlying oral structure to make a diagnosis.

Dental Emergencies

At Orange Family Dental, we never want to leave you with a toothache or any other dental emergency. We schedule time for emergency appointments each day with all of our Dentists.

Our dentists, Drs Patrick Rourke, Cheng Zhang and Amy Calvin, understand how frightening dental emergencies can be. Dental pain can rob you of sleep and derail even the best-laid plans.

There are many definitions for a dental emergency. For us, we consider:

  • Toothache
  • Jaw ache with or without swelling
  • Broken tooth or damaged restoration
  • Tooth or restoration knocked out
  • Bleeding
  • Object lodged between teeth
  • Soft tissue injury

There are more possible scenarios—too many to consider—so if ever you’re feeling uncertain, please contact us. We can sort through your situation and determine the best course of action for you.

We never want to leave you in pain or risk your oral health. For these reasons, we work hard to get you in front of our one of our dentists straight away.

If you are experiencing dental pain don't leave it untreated.

We encourage you to contact a member of our team if you notice lingering or increased tooth sensitivity or oral pain.

We proudly serve patients in Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Cowra, and other local neighbours.
